Evolution July 16-August 20 Reception August 13 6-9pm

The Arts Council's Community Gallery, located on the 2nd floor at 427 Laurel Street in downtown Baton Rouge, will present "Evolution: New Work by Tom Lorio and Comusina Celan."

The exhibition will run from July 16th - August 20th.  There will be a closing reception for the public on Friday, August 13, 2010 from 6:00-8:00pm at the Community Gallery.

Tom Lorio has been a metalsmith and jewelry maker for over 30 years.  His new work focuses the on the circular shape.  Tom brings a scientific method to his body of work as he explores the geometry of the circle. Tom has masters' degrees in both education and fine arts. Since he first began instructing students in jewelry construction and metalsmithing classes three decades ago, he has spent hundreds of hours teaching his craft to all age groups and through various programs including through the LSU School of Art and LSU Leisure Classes.  He maintains his own studio, Made in the Shade, where he practices his craft producing work for commissions, galleries and shows.

Comusina Celan is a resident of New Orleans and received her BFA with Highest Honors in painting and drawing from the University of Georgia in 2008.  Her new work is entitled The Evolution of House and Home. She says, "I am fascinated by the idea of a traveling home. Nomads, Migrants, Gypsies, Transients, Tramps, Travelers: we have many names for those who live in many places and claim none as his or her own. I find myself asking: What qualifies as a home? Is it the feeling of comfort, or a familiar location? What interpretations of home can be found in literature and in our daily routines? Could a home be the means of one's travel: a ship, a train, a wagon, a horse, a drug, or a womb?"  These ideas are explored in her work on exhibit in the Community Gallery.
