Artist Statement

The development of my painting style reflects my life.  Going to my studio to paint is, for me, like keeping a diary.  Drawing and painting since early childhood developed into a lifelong journey.  Fascination and influence of different artists from different times in history accompany my expressive style in painting and drawing.  Growing up in Germany, I was very much exposed to German Expressionists, but also had a love for Michelangelo during childhood.  In the United States, I discovered the Hudson River School with their Romantic expression in landscape scenes; I admired the Romantic painter, Delacroix, and my paintings of landscapes were influenced by John Constable.  Later during Graduate School, my paintings changed to abstraction, and I was drawn to the Abstract Expressionists, like Wilhelm de Kooning and Arshile Gorky.  Since graduating from LSU in painting, I continue to improve my paintings.  Color, light and gestural brushstrokes are best executed for me on a larger scale on canvas.  Today, I naturally paint abstract expressionistic style with recognizable elements.  This style is also an expression of my philosophy of thinking.
