Our Mission

Our Mission is to foster the creative capacity and vibrancy of the capital region through advocacy, resources, teaching & training.

Established in 1973 through efforts led by the Junior League of Baton Rouge, the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge (ACGBR) endeavors to promote cultural growth, economic development, and educational enhancement through the arts in and around the 10-parish region it serves. Those parishes include Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupée, St. Helena, Tangipahoa, West Feliciana, and West Baton Rouge.

Why Not?

A 50-Year Retrospective Celebrating the Community that Built the Arts

The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge proudly announces the release of Why Not, a new book by writer and arts advocate Robin Palmer Blanche, honoring the first fifty years of the Arts Council and the generations of people who shaped it.

Created as both a celebration and a community time capsule, Why Not tells the story of the Arts Council through the voices of the artists, teachers, partners, visionaries, and volunteers who helped it grow. The book offers a rich retrospective of the organization’s evolution—its early beginnings, signature programs, public art initiatives, festivals, educational outreach, and the cultural milestones that helped define Baton Rouge’s creative identity.

We cannot fulfill our mission through silence. We stand firmly against racism, sexism, and in full support of a just society.

We support artists of color and others who are marginalized, including LGBTQ+ artists and community members, and welcome and support all artistic platforms and voices. We also strive to use our artistic expression to educate and be educated, to listen, and to try to better understand your realities in an authentic way. We support policies that promote equality for all people, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth and adults in workplaces, healthcare, housing, religious organizations, marriage, and all aspects of life.
