Roland Guerin Honored with 2026 Alvin Batiste Hall of Distinction Award

The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge proudly announced acclaimed bassist, composer, bandleader, and educator Roland Guerin as the recipient of the 2026 Alvin Batiste Hall of Distinction Award, presented at the conclusion of the final concert of this season’s River City Jazz Masters series, Vincent Herring’s Something Else!.

The Alvin Batiste Hall of Distinction Award recognizes a performer or educator for a “Lifetime Contribution and Cultivation of Jazz Music in the State of Louisiana.” The award honors the enduring legacy of legendary clarinetist and educator Alvin Batiste, whose influence helped shape generations of musicians and the modern jazz community in Louisiana and beyond.

Regarded as one of the major instrumentalists of his time, Alvin Batiste largely redefined the improvisational role of the clarinet. A graduate of Louisiana State University, Batiste became the first African American guest soloist to perform with the New Orleans Philharmonic. Alongside fellow innovators including Ellis Marsalis, Harold Batiste, and Ed Blackwell, he helped establish the modern jazz movement in New Orleans.

Batiste was equally revered as an educator, helping develop jazz programs at Southern University and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts while conducting workshops at institutions including Harvard, Yale, UCLA, and the University of Paris. His impact continues to resonate through the countless musicians he mentored throughout his lifetime.

Few embody that legacy more fully than Roland Guerin.

A New Orleans-based singer-songwriter, bassist, composer, and arranger, Guerin has spent decades building an internationally respected career rooted in innovation, storytelling, and musical excellence. Raised in a deeply musical family, Guerin began playing bass at age 11 and drew inspiration from jazz, rock, R&B, blues, folk, and zydeco traditions that continue to shape his singular sound today.

While studying marketing at Southern University, Guerin joined Alvin Batiste’s groundbreaking ensemble, The Jazztronauts, where he absorbed many of Batiste’s forward-thinking musical concepts and philosophies. That mentorship would become foundational to Guerin’s artistic voice and career trajectory.

Over the years, Guerin has toured and performed with an extraordinary roster of legendary artists, including George Benson, Jimmy Scott, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, John Scofield, Marcus Roberts, and Nicholas Payton, among many others.

By honoring Roland Guerin with the Alvin Batiste Hall of Distinction Award, the Arts Council celebrates not only his extraordinary musical accomplishments, but also his ongoing commitment to carrying forward the spirit of innovation, mentorship, and cultural preservation that defined Alvin Batiste’s remarkable legacy.
