A Refugee’s Origin

Featuring Dr. Kahn Ho
April 27-May 29

Opening Reception: May 1, 6-8 PM

A Refugee’s Origin traces K.T. Ho’s diasporic journey from Vietnam through a powerful body of mixed-media paintings and drawings. Rooted in personal and collective history, the exhibition examines how French colonialism shaped her family’s migration and continues to reverberate through identity, belief, and survival. Drawing from the intersection of cultures and religions, Ho explores themes of self-sacrifice, assimilation, and the emotional cost of absolute tolerance within Buddhist philosophy—where survival can carry the risk of self-erasure. Created as an act of reconciliation, the work reflects on refugee trauma, colonial legacy, and the ways these forces ultimately shaped her life in Louisiana. Featuring approximately 25 works ranging from intimate studies to large-scale pieces, A Refugee’s Origin invites viewers to consider how colonialism impacts lived experience—both for others and within their own lives.

Renowned cellist and sculptor Dennis Parker brings his dual creative practices together in Dennisparkercelloetc, an exhibition exploring sound, structure, and the physicality of music. Known internationally for his work expanding the cello repertoire, Parker translates musical thinking into sculptural form—creating objects that echo rhythm, resonance, and performance. When not playing cello, Parker, an avid woodworker and sculptor, creates objects that extend his musical expression and complement the delicate act of performance with the risky business of maneuvering wood through various cutting and shaping devices.

The exhibition opens on March 1 with a special showing at MPAC on March 6 and invites viewers to experience the cello beyond the stage.
