BAILEY SIMON-SHERMAN

Bailey is an established local Baton Rouge watercolor artist who grew up in Kaplan, Louisiana. As a child she was surrounded by plants and wildlife at her grandparents’ country home. As a result her paintings gravitate towards Louisiana native ecology including butterflies, plants, and wildlife. She is passionate about preserving the environment and biodiversity that she grew up with. Her specialty is scientific illustrations of butterflies native to Louisiana, and she is known for drawing in entomologists and lepidopterists to her works to swap tips on where to find zebra swallowtails and spring azures in south Louisiana. Her medium of choice is a watercolor paint made from soil by a soil scientist based in the American Northwest. She primarily paints on rough paper and at times will incorporate sketches with archival ink. When she uses oils, they are a plant and mineral based pigment, and she works with both canvas and wood surfaces. Bailey is a self-taught artist and framer. She is just looking to save all of the butterflies and beautiful flora and fauna of the world on a daily basis. Bailey is an avid gardener and butterfly chaser. It’s important to her to help spread the message on how planting native plants, preserving wild flowers, and refraining from the use of pesticides can help to save pollinators and other creatures from decline. She chooses to use fine art paper for her stationery and prints, so that the pieces can eventually be framed and have a long life. She also uses bagasse and bio based packaging for her products. All production of her fine art stationery and prints are done in house by Bailey and her team with care! She enjoys painting in her studio or outside and is always looking for the best lighting to paint alongside. It’s most important to her that the work that she puts out into the world won’t negatively impact the beautiful life that she paints in her pieces.
