River City Jazz Masters 2024-25: A Series to Remember
This year’s River City Jazz Masters series lit up the Manship Theatre stage with unforgettable performances by Jazzmeia Horn, Emmet Cohen, Yellowjackets featuring Kurt Elling, and a finale by percussionist Sammy Figueroa.
Beyond the stage, the series made a powerful impact in local schools. Jazzmeia Horn led an interactive session at Wedgewood Elementary, inspiring students with stories and music. Emmet Cohen hosted a jazz masterclass at Baton Rouge Magnet High School, diving into technique and improvisation. The Yellowjackets offered a behind-the-scenes soundcheck for students from Thrive Academy.
The finale was a joyful celebration of jazz. Councilwoman Carolyn Coleman welcomed the audience, and 2023 Alvin Batiste Hall of Distinction honoree Mike Esneault presented this year’s award to legendary drummer Troy Davis.
Special thanks to Shell, 225 Magazine, Louisiana Lottery, Baton Rouge Business Report, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Hotel Indigo for supporting this series.
We’re grateful for another season of world-class jazz and community connection—and can’t wait for what’s next.
